A new era

After eleven years at Spots, we've decided it's time to move on and are putting the business up for sale. We've had a wonderful time running Southwold Post Office and have learnt a great deal, including that fact that it requires a lot of energy and commitment to keep on top of things. We're not short on energy or commitment but we've probably got a little less than we had eleven years ago!  With another nine years left to run on our lease, we'd like to give somebody else the opportunity to put their own stamp on the business for the remaining years.

Rumours will no doubt abound that the Post Office is closing but that's simply not true.  We are selling the Post Office and shop as a going concern.   Although any new owner will almost certainly make some changes, the business will essentially remain the same - just without Guy and Sarah behind the counter.  The rest of the team will still be here.

The business is being marketed by Humberstones, who specialise in selling Post Offices and will be able to talk to any interested buyers. Meanwhile we'll be here until the right person comes along.  After that we'll still be in Southwold as we will be continuing to run High Tide along with Wave, our new greetings card venture in nearby Bungay.

How Much Is that Doggie In The Window

Not really so much about how much is that doggie in the window - more about which doggie in the window is the best.  Crufts is 125 years old and thought we'd join in the fun.

Have a look at our window and you'll see the all of the dogs that have won "Best In Class" in the Spots Crufts show.  One of these lovely dogs will win "Best In Show" but we need you to decide which one it will be.  Pop in, pick up a form and place a tick beside your favourite dog.  All of the entries will be placed in a draw and the winner will be able to choose their favourite as the prize.

The competition closes on Monday night (14th March) so don't hang around!

Southwold Post office is set for a major refurbishment in January.  The work will lead to a brighter, more modern Post Office which will be open seven days a week.  To enable the work to take place, the Post Office will close at 5.30pm on Monday 11th January and will remain closed until lunchtime on Wednesday 27th January.  Don't worry, Spots will remain open for the majority of the refurbishment project however the nearest full time Post Office will be in Halesworth. Anglian buses operate an hourly service to Halesworth. If, however, anybody is unable to use this they should let Post Office staff  know and they will liaise with The Voluntary Help Centre to see if an alternative arrangement can be made.

When the Southwold works are completed, services will be provided from a new-style Main Post Office benefitting from an open plan counter in addition to a counter similar to the existing one.  A Post Office position will also be situated alongside the shop counter. The move is part of a major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed to make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and modern open plan environments. By opening until 5.30pm on Saturday and from 10.00 until 4.00pm on Sundays, the Post Office will be open for an additional eleven hours each week.

We know how important having a Post Office is to residents of Southwold, Reydon and the surrounding area. By making this change we will be able to meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

Retail Industry Awards

We are really excited to have been shortlisted for the Retail Industry Awards in the category of best Post Office Independent Business.  Why are we excited?  Because it recognises that we like doing what "it says on the tin".  We like being a Post Office. We like being an independent business. We like the fact that we can join the dots up and we really like the fact that somebody who may give us an award for it!

Of course, there's a bit more to it than that.  The judges are looking for a business that offers good customer service.  We like to think that we do - and we have to thank our staff for that.  The judges are also looking for a business that is involved with the community - and we have to thank our community for that.  Southwold is a great place to live and work.  We like to be involved with the community because of that and we like to think that we manage to put a bit back as a result.

The awards ceremony is on the 24th of September at The Grosvenor House. We are going as guests of Post Office Ltd who are kindly arranging for us to get there as well.  Will we win? Well, there are three strong competitors who will be asking themselves the same question.  Obviously we'd be very happy if we did. But actually, we're very pleased just to be recognised for doing what we enjoy doing.

With Easter over with. we're coming to the end of the school holidays.  Or are we?  We're a bit confused here at Spots.  While some people broke up the week before Easter, some don't seem to have stopped until the day before Good Friday.  That makes for some rather odd sales patterns and it's a bit tricky to get staffing levels correct.  .  We'll find out for sure next week when we'd expect Southwold to be a little bit quieter.  Who knows.  It's all part of what makes life in Southwold a life of two halves sort-of-thing!

We've been a bit tied up during January.  Top Drawer and Toy Fair in London followed by Spring Fair in Birmingham.  We should really have worn pedometers to see how many miles we covered in the quest for new products.  However many it was, we saw some great new lines and acquired a few new suppliers as well.  These events are always a great opportunity to get re-acquainted with existing suppliers as well as meeting new ones but the main purpose is to buy.  We've done just that and hope you'll like the toys, gifts and cards which will be arriving in stock soon

Southwold's Switch on Night

Father Christmas c1980

The 2014 Christmas Lights will be switched on by Father Christmas on December 5th. We are very fortunate that Adnams have once again provided generous funding to make Southwold a special place in the run up to Christmas. Come along to enjoy the event and, even if you can't get here in time for the switching on of the lights at 7.00pm on Friday, pop into town over the weekend.  There's always a great atmosphere over the whole weekend with so many people enjoying the peaceful environment of Southwold to do their shopping rather than the manic commercialism of bigger towns and cities.

Thanks to our own Shirley Boggis for the use of her dad's fantastic picture of Lights Night in the '70's

Too early for Christmas?

Every year, the same dilemma.  For me, Christmas never really became something to think about until December kicked in.  Unfortunately that's not a great mind-set when you start to sell toys, gifts and cards for a living.  Fortunately for us, our customers have other ideas and start asking us for Christmas cards as early as September.  That's a very helpful prompt and means that we can start to get some supplies on the shelves pretty much as soon as some people expect to see them.  The downside of that is that other customers comment that they can't believe we're pushing Christmas so soon.  We can please some of the people some of the time etc etc...
